Star of Tula Beauty – a WIP

staroftulabeauty_sewnbyleanne_patchworkquilt

The Star of Tula Beauty is an ongoing work in progress.

As part of the Ms Midge Aussie Charm Swap – we all started this Charm Along with 112 5″ charms.

I have only recently began to like/ love Tula Pink Fabrics.  The colours are bright and vibrant, and the colour combinations are bold and daring – which is fantastic !!  These bold and daring colours have forced me to look out of my comfort zone as a Quilter.  I have spent hours sorting this charm pack into a rainbow of colour shades, then searching for ideas for how to use the charms to their full potential !  A lot of Tula Pink’s fabrics are fantastic for fussy cutting – which is one of my loves – but the 5″ charms were already cut and many of the prints had only a 1/2 to a 1/4 of the design – grr !   So a lot of my ideas just wouldn’t work. But that is all part of a charm swaps’ journey which is 100% ok !  So out came my trusty graph paper and away I went !

Finally I sorted out the charms into an array of 6 colours (this took a LONG time !!)  and A Star was Born (very appropriate for this time of the Year 🙂

I have made many Quilts now using Equilateral Triangles and they are as Versatile to me as HSTs !!  The Vibrancy of this Star of Tula Beauty is amazing !!  I just may have made my first Quilt for Myself 😉 ??!

My Son wasn’t that keen to stand on the balcony today.  His face says a thousands words – some of which I’m sure contains the phrase “Seriously Mum !!  Do I have to hold another Quilt !!”   The joys of school holidays !

The Star of Tula Beauty is surrounded by Emma Louise’s White and Tula Pinks Eden.  I considered making the border from extra Bright Tula Pink charms, but then thought this would detract from the centre star !

I have fussy cut the 5″ charms as much as I could to highlight their beauty and patterns.  The triangles in the centre hexagon are a great representation of Tula Pink’s amazing creations !!

My next challenge is to decide how I will Quilt this Beauty !!  Hmmmm !  Yes I think that will take hours of sketching too !!  This really will be a Quilt of love……………..  time and tears 😉

Thank you Tula Pink for the beautiful fabric you have designed and created, and thank you Ms Midge for the Charm Swaps to enable my love of fabric and force me to work outside of my comfort zone !!

Until next time,

Leanne x

Quilt Block Design: All Equal

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockdesign_allequal

This is the second of the Quilt Blocks that I have designed in the last couple of months !!  There are many aspects of Quilting that I love :  the ability to design and see your design come to life, being able to play with gorgeous designer fabric, and the opportunity to use my maths skills that often get put on hold being a Mum of four children.

Now Alyce (aka @BlossomHeartQuilts) has made designing your own blocks even easier with her new book : DIY BLOCK Design !!  Now you will be able to design your own Quilt Blocks too !!  Make sure you have a look at the other amazing bloggers in this Blog Hop too – and hopefully you will be inspired to make your own Quilt blocks.

It is a great guide and resource for beginners or experienced quilters to use when designing their quilts.  There are fantastic tables for both Half Square Triangles and Flying Geese – so you don’t need to work out the Maths yourself.  I would thoroughly recommend it.  Alyce also explains in detail the different methods to produce Half Square Triangles and Flying Geese.

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockdesign_allequal2Instructions that follow allow you to construct a 12.5” Square Quilt block.

Fabric Requirements

Coloured Fabric :

4     6.5×3.5”

8     2.0×3.5”

Background Fabric:

8     3.5×3.5”

12   1.5×3.5”

Step 1

Construction of 4 Flying Geese Units.  (page 29 DIY Block Design)

On the 8 Background fabric 3.5” Squares draw a diagonal line from corner to corner (Picture below).

Using the Coloured Fabric 6.5×3.5”, place the background fabric 3.5” square on the right hand corner and sew along the marked line (as pictured).

With your ruler cut ¼” from the sewn line (as pictured)  Press the seam open.

Put another 3.5” Background Square on the Left hand side of the Coloured Fabric, and sew along the line.  Again Using your ruler cut ¼” from the sewn line, to leave a seam allowance.

Press your seams open.  Repeat these steps to create 4 Flying Geese Units.

Step 2

Here I like to lay the components of the Quilt Block out, next to my machine (as Pictured).

Step 3

Creating the equal signs.  Using the above layout, sew with a ¼” seam the background fabric strips to the coloured fabric.

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockdesign_allequal_equalunits

You now have 8 components of the block completed.

Step 4

Join the Flying geese units to the Equal units.

Using your ruler mark the middle of the centre block (as pictured).  This enables you to join the point of the Flying Geese unit to the Centre of the Equal unit.

You now have 4 completed components.

Step 5

Join the four components together (using the photo below) and nesting the centre seams together.

Your Quilt block is now completed !

Below, gives you an idea of what this Block will look like as a 4×4 Quilt top !!  I have used here EQ7 to produce these sketches !!
