Quilt Blocks to Heal Violence

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_tictactoe2

Back in September @jackiegillies put out the call in the Quilting Community for Tic-tac-toe Quilt Blocks on Instagram  !!  These quilt blocks were to be created and donated to surround members of the community touched by domestic violence with love and compassion, in the form of Quilts !!

What a fabulous idea !

Jackie was overwhelmed by the response !!  These are just a few of the blocks she received and now these blocks have become a Quilt to be donated !!

I am honoured to be part of this Quilting Community.  Just imagine the emotional impact that this Quilt and the others that have been made with donated blocks, batting and binding will have on the recipients.

My wish is that this quilt comforts in the healing process of the survivors of domestic violence !!  may they be surrounded and comforted with warmth and love !

Here are some more photos ……

I have used Variegated Aurifil Thread 4658 (Yellow)  which has really made the Low volume fabrics shine !!

The binding is Scrappy and in the same hues as the Crosses !!  (Sorry I can’t remember the fabric name – they were the last 2.5″ strips of a jelly roll I used long ago !)

The backing fabric is a Micheal Miller Print that has also been donated – thank you !!  The Aztec design matches the Tic-Tac-Toe feel perfectly 🙂

I read this quote on Pinterest recently….  these are only a few words – but hold A LOT of meaning xx

Knowing when to walk away is WISDOM

Being able to is COURAGE

Walking away with your head held high is DIGNITY

Thank you @jackiegilles for the amazing opportunity to be a part of this campaign, and for helping to make a small difference xx

#quiltblockstohealviolence

There are many times I love being part of the Quilting Community.  This week we are rallying together to create Quilts for victims of Domestic Violence.  Quilters from all over are creating these Tic-Tac-Toe Blocks !!

In Australia alone (ABS statistics):

  • 89 women were killed by their current or former partner between 2008-10. This equates to nearly one woman every week.
  • 61% of women had children in their care when the violence occurred, including 48% who stated the children had seen and heard the violence.
  • 58% of women have never contacted the police.
  • This year alone 62 women have been killed by their partner or close relative in Australia alone – OMG – that is 2 a week !!

These statistics are horrifying, terrifying and send goosebumps down my spine !!  The VIOLENCE must stop !!

Do I have the answers – No !!

But when I saw that @JackieGillies was rallying the Quilting Community to help – in a small way – but one that could make the difference in the partner or child feeling loved and recovering from their experiences, that those of us not a part of – could never fully understand or comprehend !  I was definitely in !!

The created Quilts could surround the victims with COMFORT and LOVE, so that they know there are people out there that DO CARE !

The response that @JackieGilles has had on Instagram has been really heartening <3 <3 <3.
