Quilt Blocks to Heal Violence

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_tictactoe2

Back in September @jackiegillies put out the call in the Quilting Community for Tic-tac-toe Quilt Blocks on Instagram  !!  These quilt blocks were to be created and donated to surround members of the community touched by domestic violence with love and compassion, in the form of Quilts !!

What a fabulous idea !

Jackie was overwhelmed by the response !!  These are just a few of the blocks she received and now these blocks have become a Quilt to be donated !!

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_donatedblocks

Can you see your Quilt block ??

To have a look at the other Quilt Blocks to Heal Violence – use the #quiltblockstohealviolence to see all the fabulous quilt blocks and the quilts that have been created from them !!

Now these are a Stunning Quilt !!

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_tictactoe3

I am honoured to be part of this Quilting Community.  Just imagine the emotional impact that this Quilt and the others that have been made with donated blocks, batting and binding will have on the recipients.

My wish is that this quilt comforts in the healing process of the survivors of domestic violence !!  may they be surrounded and comforted with warmth and love !

Here are some more photos ……

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_tictactoe4

I have used Variegated Aurifil Thread 4658 (Yellow)  which has really made the Low volume fabrics shine !!

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_aurifilthread

The binding is Scrappy and in the same hues as the Crosses !!  (Sorry I can’t remember the fabric name – they were the last 2.5″ strips of a jelly roll I used long ago !)

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_tictactoe2

The backing fabric is a Micheal Miller Print that has also been donated – thank you !!  The Aztec design matches the Tic-Tac-Toe feel perfectly 🙂

I read this quote on Pinterest recently….  these are only a few words – but hold A LOT of meaning xx

Knowing when to walk away is WISDOM

Being able to is COURAGE

Walking away with your head held high is DIGNITY

Thank you @jackiegilles for the amazing opportunity to be a part of this campaign, and for helping to make a small difference xx

Craft, Craft, Craft galore in August…..

sewnbyleanne_craft_colouringin_aprons

Craft has certainly taken pride of place in our home this month !!  I have been dabbling in non-quilting activities – such as creating my “One hour  and longer ……” Basket for Lil’ Pip Designs, pattern testing for Little Moo Designs, with yet another TWO patterns (Kylie is amazing with her designs), creating my children’s birthday cakes and making aprons as party favours for my daughter’ cupcake decorating party. The house has been filled with Glitter, Glue and Sugar.

But before I show you just how this month has got so busy – I must show you how perfectly the “One hour and longer…..”  Basket looks in my sewing space !!  It is just awesome <3 <3

sewnbyleanne_craft_onehourbasket_lilpipdesigns

I adore Quiet Play’s Paper Piecing Patterns.  This one has been on my to do list for a while.  It fits perfectly on top of my thread drawers !!  yep they are all filled with Aurifil threads !!  Thank you so much for the basket Jane – it is divine !!  Currently it holds my WIP Cotton and Steel Hexagons for the up and coming Charm Along.  More on this later though………..

Back to the craft……..

Here’s a look at the Frozen Ice Castle Attempt I made, with coloured toffee !!  I have stacked up a mountain of cupcakes and surrounded it with toffee shards !!  Not a bad attempt for my first attempt at making toffee – at least I didn’t ruin any saucepans !!

sewnbyleanne_craft_kidsbirthdays

The Party Favour Aprons for the girls to wear, also became the craft activity too.  I have used a lightweight canvas on the front, and the back I used Michael Miller Fabrics new Colouring-in Range Panels.  Each panel is 60cms.  The width was perfect for each apron.  At a local craft store I found Fabric Pastels in a little box – so each girl had one to take home and finish the colouring in also !!

sewnbyleanne_craft_colouringin_aprons

This Bombshell Bag is just one of the patterns I have made for Kylie from Little Moo Designs in the past couple of months.  I really enjoy pattern teasing for her.  The patterns are great – easy to read and follow and the best part is – the result is useful and practical !!

sewnbyleanne_craft_bombshellbag

This bag is great as a little girls toiletry bag, a make up bag or simply for there bits and pieces.  I quite like this pink laminated cotton print with the black cats and their green bow ties !  I found it in  Gail B’s Patchwork,  I work casually for.

As well as all of this, I have been working behind-the-scenes on my computer, on something very exciting !!  Which I will be able to reveal early next year.  Sometimes it is so hard to keep a secret…… shhhhhhh!  I find computer work quite frustrating most of the time.  I get an idea in my head of how I want something to look, but then it takes ages to figure out how to create it on the computer.  I guess it is a skill within itself though……….

Apart from all of this, Quilting remains my favourite craft and I have a couple of WIP which I will show you later in the week……….

Enjoy…..

Leanne xx

New Nursery Decor for a Special Little Boy…..

sewnbyleanne_nurserydecor_backyardbaby1

A beautiful new nursery decor for a special little boy…

Chrissie chose new beautiful ranges of fabric before Master P was born – this stunning Backyard Baby Range from Michael Miller and the pink Wee Wanderer also from Michael Miller. We didn’t know what gender their new addition was going to be – so creating could not start before Master P arrived.

The order was :  fitted sheet, flat sheet, bunting and 2 cushion covers.
sewnbyleanne_nurserydecor_backyardbaby1

So the week master P arrived I ordered this gorgeous fabric range, and when it arrived – it is even more gorgeous in person <3.  The fabric has a beautiful soft feel to it.

sewnbyleanne_nurserydecor_cushioncovers

The first cushion cover is square, and just lent itself to some fussy cutting beside the polka dots.  Chrissie had sent me a text during the week, and used Paddy instead of Patrick – so I decided to machine embroider this gorgeous “pet” name to the cushion.  ON the second cushion I found this teal ribbon with polka dots at Spotlight while going through fabric – and thought it would be a perfect match and it was !!.

The fitted sheet and flat sheet were made from the polka dots – giving the nursery decor lots of colour for a sweet little boy.

sewnbyleanne_nurserydecor_bunting

The bunting has 15 flags and is double sided.  I used an Ash Blue for Patrick’s name and machine applique’d the name to the front flag !  It looks so good in his room all together.

With the spare fabric – I created a cot sized pillowcase for when he is older.

I feel very honoured to have been entrusted with this creation.  Bringing a newborn baby home to their new nursery that you have spent HOURS contemplating and designing  is such a special time for all parents…

Enjoy <3 <3

This is just one example of how Sewn by Leanne creates Nursery Decor to suit your needs.

Have a great day.

Sunday Wrap up

sewnbyleanne_sweetheartblock1

The Sunday Wrap Up ….

I’m starting a series of Sunday afternoon wrap ups, where I will be showing you what has been going on at Sewn by Leanne.

This week involved Quilt Tops, Quilt Blocks, receiving a gorgeous handmade gift for my daughter from KBS Designs, working with gorgeous fabrics, organising an 11 year olds birthday and just enjoying being a Mum.

Mothers Day 2015

sewnbyleanne_mothersday2015

There were lots of cuddles and kisses this morning, a sleep in and gorgeous sweet pressies to greet me today !!  Gifts that they had made at school and kinder, along with mothers day stall purchases and of course shh – my favourite Maltesers ! (Chocolate without being overtly chocolate!)  Candles, Zipper Purse, key ring, pens, chore vouchers – I can cash in on anytime – and cards to treasure …. all making a great Mothers Day.

Together with dear friends we spent the day, playing and chatting – with soup, bread and chocolate pudding !  Thank you <3

Quilt tops

This weeks aim was to finish 4 quilt tops that 3 gorgeous clients have requested !  The first two Quilt tops are part of my favourite Equilateral triangle Cot Quilt Range.  I love how the different colours pop, especially outside in the gorgeous sunshine that popped through the clouds in Melbourne earlier in the week 🙂  The colours are all from Robert Kaufman’s Kona Cotton Solid Range.

sewnbyleanne_equilateraltrianglecotquilt1

See how the second Quilt has the warmer colours – with a touch of Amber, Latte and Chocolate !!  These Quilts are stunning to brighten up a nursery <3.

sewnbyleanne_equilateraltrianglecotquilt2The third Quilt top is filled with loads of character….  Each fabric gives each fox, it’s very own personality ….

sewnbyleanne_foxyquiltAll the fabrics were created using fabrics within my stash, oranges, yellows and reds are some of my faves !  With a couple of contrasting colours to liven up the “foxy pack”.  Can’t wait for my client to receive this Quilt 😉  I have used Elizabeth Hartman’s Fox block Pattern to create the faces, and altered the sashing and layout to fit the Quilt dimensions I am working towards.

sewnbyleanne_glitzquilt

This King Single Quilt top is even more stunning and glamorous in person.  I have seen this Michael Miller’s Glitz Fabric range in online fabric stores frequently, but now having seen it in person – it is simply stunning.  Many would say “No, don’t put spots and chevrons together”  but I think these work perfectly.  And the white sashing allows this little girl to treasure her Quilt into her teens and beyond.  The pinwheel blocks create interest amongst the Squares.

Alice in Wonderland Clock by KBS Designs

sewnbyleanne_KBSdesigns_aliceclock

On Friday this gorgeous clock arrived for my daughter and it will look AWESOME on her wall.  Being in First Grade, she is obsessed with the time at present.  When I saw Alice I just knew she would be a perfect fit into Miss C’s Room.  Karyn has gorgeous high quality bespoke decor for all ages – make sure you go and have a look at her page  here !

Quilt Blocks

This week’s block was “The Busy Block” at Blossom Heart Quilts.  I am loving learning how to paper piece !  This block has an amazing transformation depending on how you organise the four parts of the block.

sewnbyleanne_busyblockcollage

In the end I choose the third arrangement, as I liked the way the light blue frames the “leaves”.  This Busy block would make an amazing Quilt, with the impression of leaves and wonky stars !

sewnbyleanne_busyblock3

My Hive’s May Queen Choose “The Double Star” block for her choice in greens and aquas.  This is one of my favourite blocks so far that we have created.  I am excited to send this one to my Queen and look forward to seeing her final Quilt top.
sewnbyleanne_doublestar_mayqueenAnd as I LOVED creating Elizabeth Hartman’s Foxes so much, here is a close up of a FOXY Fox !

sewnbyleanne_foxquilt2

Last night as I ran out of Kona cotton solid White – I played with a few scraps – and created this “Sweetheart Block”  it is not finished yet -I aim to get it to 12.5″, making it “Three hearts in One”.  but we will see how I go !  it is a bit fiddly with half inch blocks – and might be better as a paper pieced block – but I shall let you know !

sewnbyleanne_sweetheartblock1

I hope you have enjoyed the Sunday Wrap up – I hope to make this series a weekly post, so that you can see what is being created and designed at Sewn by Leanne.  Again I hope everyone enjoyed their Mothers Day.  Give your Mum a huge Hug……..

Blessings as always,

Leanne

Quilt Blocks and more……..

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_churndash

Signing up to the Quilt Block Boot camp and The Bee Hive Swap  has been sensational.  I cannot thank Sew Delicious, Blossom Heart Quilts and Gnome Angel enough for organising them <3 <3  .  Please excuse the number of photos in this post compared to words, But I’m just having so much fun extending my skills, I have to show you.

Economy Quilt Blocks

These are just gorgeous.  They are simple but so effective !  I plan to create a couple of “I spy” Quilts with these Quilt blocks.  I love to fussy cut, so I have been enjoying these !  Which block do you like the most ???  The Sneetches holding hands is my favourite !!

11048672_743500402430600_4519901315735226680_n

Quilt Block Boot Camp

The rest week last week has allowed me to catch up:  Yes as you scroll through the photos you will recognise similar fabrics, and my aim is to build a Quilt with all of these Quilt Blocks or maybe even more than ONE !!

The SIMPLE FRIENDSHIP QUILT BLOCKS are first – I just love how the positive and negative images work together !!

Fabric :  Cotton and Steel Tanagrams in Indigo and Petit Street by Dashwood studios.

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_wonkystars

The CROSS-STITCH BLOCK by PileO’Fabric is gorgeous too.  I’m undecided whether this Quilt Block is actually suited to 2 fabrics that are patterned.  It may be a bit too busy.  What do you think ??

Fabric:  Creative Thursday Fabric on White and Aneela Hoey Little Apples Red.

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_crossstitch

From the same fabric I made the simple little HEART QUILT BLOCK by Cluck Cluck Sew.

When I first saw this photo I thought I’d forgotten to sew the left top corner piece to finish the heart, however I have I assure you – I just didn’t make sure it just has too much of the red heart in the small piece.  Something to always watch out for, especially when you are cutting 1″ blocks !!  It does’t take much for the cutting to go wrong !!

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_heart

Today, I enjoyed sewing the CHURN DASH QUILT BLOCK by Cluck Cluck Sew (another one of my favourite Bloggers).  I love the fussy cut middle Square.  Mixing Cotton and Steel fabrics with the more traditional pattern of Tilda is not something I would ordinarily think of.  But I think the pink highlights the pink tanagrams.

Fabric:  Cotton and Steel Tanagrams in Indigo, Tilda Damask Ruby Pink, Riley Blake’s Country Girl.

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_churndash

The Bee Hive Swap

These Blocks are more challenging, but the end results are stunning.

Firstly the block I made for the month of March was the WANTA FANTA by The Better Off Thread.  The requirements were any scrappy bright fabrics for the corners and fan, but the background was to be Chartreuse (green).

This is the result, the Quilt Block is currently in the snail mail to the Queen Bee, so hopefully she will like it !!

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_wantafantaThe challenging aspect to this block is to get your scant 1/4″ seams correct so that the fans will line up with the corners.

Fabrics:  Again I have used Cotton and Steel Tanagrams, 2 Creative Thursday Fabrics, and The light blue fabric is by Sue Penn for Studio B fabrics.

As well as creating my monthly swap Quilt Block, I am making the additional blocks, which will go into my Quilt eventually !!  This MINERAL QUILT BLOCK by Jane at QUILT JANE is gorgeous and great for those little scraps.

Again I have used my favourite Cotton and Steel Fabric, but included a great low volume black and White text Print called Vineyard from Riley Blake fabrics.  This is new to my stash and bought it from the Cotton Factory in the last couple of weeks.  Make sure you follow Alison on Instagram @Cotton Factory Destash as she has great deals on unusual stunning fabrics like this one !

I was very chuffed when @QuiltJane on Instagram shared this block over the weekend.  Thank you 🙂

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_mineral

QCA Bee

This is the last block I’m sharing today !!  It is called the X PLUS QUILT BLOCK.  I love the bright scrappy feel of it, and can’t wait to see this Quilt put together !!  A tutorial can be found on the Badskirt blog.

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_xplus

Using a bright fabric for the PLUS and then extending with a dark certainly works for this block.  Again I have used the Vineyard Low Volume Fabric .  I love the red centre of this block !!

As you can see hopefully these Blocks will come together in an awesome Quilt !!  Some are easy and others are challenging, but I think sometimes the easier ones are just as  stunning.  Let me know what you think of the blocks, and if you feel so inclined try one of out (or all of them !)  Just click on the links !

If you do try one of them, please share with me !!  Here in the comments or on Instagram @sewnbyleanne

Happy Quilting

Leanne 🙂

Preschool Sheet sets

These Preschool sheet sets have been popular over the last two months.

The standard sets include a cot sized pillowcase, fitted sheet and bag to store these in.  With each set I personalise the bag and the pillowcase.  Your child will always know which mattress is theirs with these lovely sheet sets.

Preschoolsheetset_harry_sewnbyleanne

As you can see I appliqué your child’s name to the pillowcase and the bag.  This set includes a cot sized Doona cover (120x100cms) as Harry isn’t quite ready for day care yet.  I have used the les monsiuers Michael Miller Fabric which is beautiful and soft.  The Doona cover is closed with a zip at the base for ease of use and versatility.  I love this fabric as it includes solo many vehicles for the boys – rockets, racing cars and planes,  but unfortunately it is getting quite hard to find in Australia :-(.

I have made many preschool sheet sets for the girls, but this latest one is one of my favourites.  Also made from one of my favourite fabric designers Tanya Whelan.

preschoolsheetset_abby_sewnbyleanne

Again this set includes a fitted sheet, personalised pillowcase and drawstring bag.  In addition my customer asked for a flat sheet to match.  Pink and Hearts (what more could we need on Valentine’s day).

These Preschool sheet sets are versatile and practical, but Beautiful and Unique as well.  If you would like additions to your set just message or email me and let me know !!

A standard Preschool sheet set includes:

  • Cot sized Fitted Sheet
  • Cot sized pillowcase – personalised
  • Drawstring carry bag – personalised

Also Available :

  • Matching Flat sheet
  • Cot Doona cover (120x100cm) with zipper closure.

These sets are designed and Created by myself, so just let me know if you would like any other additions or alterations and I will let you know if these are possible.

These and all other Sewn by Leanne Products are available at www.sewnbyleanne.com.au and www.sewnbyleanne.etsy.com.

Quilt Blocks Galore

Quiltblock_raspberrykiss_sewnbyleanne

So this year instead of fabric swapping I have decided to participate in Quilt Block Swaps.  Firstly as it seems like a lot of fun seeing how others choose their blocks and then their fabrics and also to extend my skills as a Quilter.

So this year I’m participating in

  1. Quilt Block Boot Camp run over at www.sewdelicious.com.au (Ros has the most gorgeous blog – check it out!!)
  2. Quilt Club Australia Bee  – this is run on Facebook.
  3. The Bee Hive Swap run over at www.blossomheartquilts.com and www.gnomeangel.com

The Quilt Block Boot Camp

There will be a new block to create each week.  This week it was the gorgeous Raspberry Kiss Quilt Block.  The Wooden Spoon Quilting has a great tutorial to follow. Here is my version.  I love the block as it is simple yet with fabric variations it can look completely different !!

Quiltblock_raspberrykiss_sewnbyleanne

Quilt Club Australia Bee

Here a group of 12 enthusiastic quilters get to choose their own block and fabric colours for a month and everyone else has the challenge to create it !!  I can’t wait for August until it is my turn.  My plan was to have this created this weekend, but this block has shown me that there is a HOLE in my stash of fabric – Oh No !!  I am short of chocolate brown fabrics :-(.  This is the example of our Queen for the month of February has provided – next Sunday I shall show you what I have made her !

FebruaryQuiltBlock_sewnbyleanne

This photo was taken by my February Queen Bee.  I can’t wait to make it for her once I find a gorgeous chocolate brown fabric !!

The Bee Hive Swap

I am so excited about this swap!!  2 gorgeous Quilt blocks each month to practice, and the opportunity to network with gorgeous quilters.  Ever since I started quilting I have followed Blossom Heart Quilts blog and the Gnome Angel blog.  They both have an amazing eye for fabric combinations, and their sewing skills I truly admire and enjoy reading their blogs each week.

This month:  the two Quilt Blocks included “Star Plus” by Quiet Play (yet another gorgeous blog!) and “Tic Tac Toe” by Blossom Heart Quilts.

Tictactoe_QuiltBlocks_sewnbyleanne
Tic Tac Toe
StarPlus_QuiltBlocks_sewnbyleanne
Star Plus

As you can see all of these blocks are very different and are absolutely stunning.  I love Cotton and Steel fabrics – so you will see a lot of these in my Blocks that I show you this year.  These are my interpretations of the blocks, and I love that you can have the same person create the same block, but by changing the fabrics they will look completely different !!  This is what I love about Quilting.

Feel free to follow along !!

Leanne 🙂
