Spring is here !!

sewnbyleanne_spring_blogtember

Spring is one of those seasons that just make you smile !!  And today it was just beautiful to see the Sun come through the clouds and feel its warmth.  As we drive around the suburbs now, the flowers are blooming and colours are returning.  it has been a COLD and chilly Winter here in Melbourne this year so it is nice to be finally defrosting !

To celebrate the start of Spring, I am joining the Blog-tember Challenge by the Brave Love Blog.  I have made this decision for two reasons:

  1. To stop myself making those gorgeous Farmers Wife 1930s Blocks for the Quilt Along, I have taken the pledge not to start before the 28th September………..
  2. To get myself into a routine of blogging more regularly – wish me luck !!

The prompt for September 1st (aka TODAY) is – Introduce yourself however you like !

So on this beautiful first day of Spring here, I’m taking the plunge.  I can’t guarantee I’ll post each day – but I will give it a go, and try and give each post a “Little Quilting Tweeking”.

sewnbyleanne_behindthescenes_leannephotoThis is me – aka – Leanne behind Sewn by Leanne.

I love to:    create, spend time with our family and friends,  listen and sing to favourite music (to the embarrassment of our children) and am completely passionate about Quilting.  I have recently rekindled my love for Paper Piecing !!

I enjoy:  being happy and living life to the maximum.  I am conservative by nature, so there is nothing rebellious or adventurous in my endeavours, but I do love to give most things a go – on one condition there is NO danger involved !

I am obsessed by:  Quilting, Sewing and most things crafty; being punctual; being kind to everyone – my Mum had a saying – “if someone hurts you – return them with overwhelming kindness, and the hurt will go ” .  This has generally stood me in good stead so far…..

I am passionate about:  our 4 gorgeous children – guiding them and steering them through life with a strong sense of self, faith and love for humanity.  I wish them to be independent, and happy individuals that love life, and a drive to be the best that they can be !!  (I’m a very proud Mum, aren’t I??)

sewnbyleanne_blogtember_Passions

When thinking of a Collage to put together my passions- this is the result – what is important to us.

  • our 4 children
  • our marriage (no photos of Mr B – he doesn’t enjoy social media)
  • our extended family and friends
  • Sewn by Leanne

Sewn by Leanne was created from my love of craft.  Having four children, life gets busy and Creating allows me to have an outlet, and yet still be the full-time Mum I enjoy being for them !!

If one asks me what my style is –  I always find it hard to answer !!  It depends on the project I have at hand – but with a broad generalisation – I would say – traditional with a modern twist.  Sounds like I’m naming a cocktail  😉 .

I often use traditional quilting blocks and give them a modern twist with vibrant modern fabrics !!

The road Sewn by Leanne has travelled so far, has been so exciting and stimulating – I tend to become completely absorbed by it !!  Blogging is a relatively new process, but one I’m SLOWLY getting the hang of…..  One of my sons said the other day “Mum you should be good at blogging – you just write what you talk about – and YOU talk ALOT”  Bless Him !!!

I hope you enjoy finding out more about Sewn by Leanne on this Blog-tember Challenge this Spring !!  Join me in my challenge……… and let me know if there are aspects to Sewn by Leanne that you would love to know about!

Until the 2nd !!

Leanne 🙂 xx

Feather Treasures – A Mini Quilt

Feather Treasures

My First Mini Quilt – Feather Treasures – this week was a delight to make.  This “Feather Bed Quilt Block” by Anna Marie Horner appealed from the first moment I saw it a couple of weeks ago.

sewnbyleanne_feathertreasures_miniquilt1

As I have been been at home most of the week with laryngitis and 4 small children on school holidays, the fabric delivery of these Dashwood Studio Fabrics from Wild Cotton Fabrics was a BIG highlight !!  The Combination of fabrics and the feather bed Quilt Block Pattern is simply stunning.

I have used Dashwood Studios Cuckoos calling as the backing – and just love those gorgeous Cuckoo Clocks and little birds !! (Please excuse the few threads I have just noticed in this photo !)

sewnbyleanne_feathertreasures_miniquiltbackingThere are a few hints I can give you now that I have made Feather treasures, to make your creations a little easier and without too much fabric wastage.

The link to the Quilt Block Tutorial is : www.annamariehorner.com/feather.bed.quilt.pdf

Tips:

1.  Strip piecing:  cut your PDF pieces out first.  Using WOFs  you need to have a length of 18″ for the pattern pieces to fit on the angle!  You can cut 3 Complete Feathers out of one WOF Strip piece.

In doing this there is quite a bit of fabric wastage, which is another reason why I have cut the four triangles of fabric left on the bias and created 2.5″ bias binding from them.

2.  Paper piecing:  This is the method I would choose next time I create this Quilt.  I think it would certainly decrease the amount of fabric wastage.  I think it would be a great beginners project to paper piecing!

3. Stem of the leaf:  Great for your little long scraps.  It is simply a 1″ strip. So look through your small scraps pile before cutting.

4. Background:  This Mini Quilt took 1/2 yard of grey Kona Cotton Solid.  At first Glance it doesn’t look like a lot of background, and I was surprised that it took most of the half yard.

I Spy Quilt ………

sewnbyleanne_ispy_economyquilt3

I spy quilt …….. that 100 5″ Economy Blocks make a Gorgeous Quilt top today.

sewnbyleanne_ispy_economyblock

One of the things I love most about Quilting is fussy cutting….. and it is even more enjoyable now that I have such a stash of fabric – I have small pieces of fabric I can use for projects such as these.  I remember looking at I Spy Quilts when I first started to quilt, and thought Oh dear – that would be a lot of FQs to buy to achieve such a project !!  And here we are 4 years later – and Yay !!

sewnbyleanne_ispy_economyblock2

This was a work in progress (one of those UFOs) for a while.  Each block being created as I found the small pieces of fabric to use.  Instead of picking the fabric first.  The fabric was used if it was big enough to cut two 3″ or 4″ squares.  Of course being an I Spy Quilt, I went through my character fussy cut bits and pieces I use for appliqué etc….

sewnbyleanne_ispy_economyblock4

I love it when you see 4 blocks together, and then a few more, and then another……  The Economy Block I used is mentioned in the gorgeous blog of Sew Delicious, in which she refers to the Economy Block tutorial of Red Pepper Quilts.

This “I Spy Quilt” is beautiful.

sewnbyleanne_ispy_economyquilt3

This 50″ Square I Spy Quilt would make a great play mat for that special someone or a cot quilt when they get a little older !!  Now for the Quilting and binding !  This Quilt will be available in my Etsy store very soon.

Thanks for reading.

Preschool Sheet sets

These Preschool sheet sets have been popular over the last two months.

The standard sets include a cot sized pillowcase, fitted sheet and bag to store these in.  With each set I personalise the bag and the pillowcase.  Your child will always know which mattress is theirs with these lovely sheet sets.

Preschoolsheetset_harry_sewnbyleanne

As you can see I appliqué your child’s name to the pillowcase and the bag.  This set includes a cot sized Doona cover (120x100cms) as Harry isn’t quite ready for day care yet.  I have used the les monsiuers Michael Miller Fabric which is beautiful and soft.  The Doona cover is closed with a zip at the base for ease of use and versatility.  I love this fabric as it includes solo many vehicles for the boys – rockets, racing cars and planes,  but unfortunately it is getting quite hard to find in Australia :-(.

I have made many preschool sheet sets for the girls, but this latest one is one of my favourites.  Also made from one of my favourite fabric designers Tanya Whelan.

Again this set includes a fitted sheet, personalised pillowcase and drawstring bag.  In addition my customer asked for a flat sheet to match.  Pink and Hearts (what more could we need on Valentine’s day).

These Preschool sheet sets are versatile and practical, but Beautiful and Unique as well.  If you would like additions to your set just message or email me and let me know !!

A standard Preschool sheet set includes:

  • Cot sized Fitted Sheet
  • Cot sized pillowcase – personalised
  • Drawstring carry bag – personalised

Also Available :
