Quilt Blocks to Heal Violence

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_tictactoe2

Back in September @jackiegillies put out the call in the Quilting Community for Tic-tac-toe Quilt Blocks on Instagram  !!  These quilt blocks were to be created and donated to surround members of the community touched by domestic violence with love and compassion, in the form of Quilts !!

What a fabulous idea !

Jackie was overwhelmed by the response !!  These are just a few of the blocks she received and now these blocks have become a Quilt to be donated !!

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_donatedblocks

Can you see your Quilt block ??

To have a look at the other Quilt Blocks to Heal Violence – use the #quiltblockstohealviolence to see all the fabulous quilt blocks and the quilts that have been created from them !!

Now these are a Stunning Quilt !!

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_tictactoe3

I am honoured to be part of this Quilting Community.  Just imagine the emotional impact that this Quilt and the others that have been made with donated blocks, batting and binding will have on the recipients.

My wish is that this quilt comforts in the healing process of the survivors of domestic violence !!  may they be surrounded and comforted with warmth and love !

Here are some more photos ……

I have used Variegated Aurifil Thread 4658 (Yellow)  which has really made the Low volume fabrics shine !!

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_aurifilthread

The binding is Scrappy and in the same hues as the Crosses !!  (Sorry I can’t remember the fabric name – they were the last 2.5″ strips of a jelly roll I used long ago !)

sewnbyleanne_quiltblockstohealviolence_tictactoe2

The backing fabric is a Micheal Miller Print that has also been donated – thank you !!  The Aztec design matches the Tic-Tac-Toe feel perfectly 🙂

I read this quote on Pinterest recently….  these are only a few words – but hold A LOT of meaning xx

Knowing when to walk away is WISDOM

Being able to is COURAGE

Walking away with your head held high is DIGNITY

Thank you @jackiegilles for the amazing opportunity to be a part of this campaign, and for helping to make a small difference xx

A Solo Giraffe

sewnbyleanne_foundationpaperpiecing_giraffe

A “Solo Giraffe” started as a small project for a very dear recipient to return a RAOK…  knowing that they have a love of Giraffes – a mini quilt came to mind.

sewnbyleanne_foundationpaperpiecing_giraffe

The Tartan Kiwi  has some amazing foundation paper piecing patterns.  Some of them have been on my to do list for a while – including this one !!  For those that are visiting – foundation paper piecing involves sewing fabric to a paper foundation in a numerical sequence.  Once the sequence is completed – you remove the paper from the back and you are hopefully left with a gorgeous image such as this giraffe, to start creating your “quilt sandwich”.  The Tartan Kiwi patterns are fantastic, great explanations and clear instructions.  However, I would not recommend this for your first foundation paper piecing project.  Make a couple of stunning stars first and then go for it !!  (There are so many on Pinterest).  Once you have the idea of following the numbers – you have your strategy down pat for any Foundation Paper Piecing pattern.

Most of the fabrics used here, have come from my stash.  The gorgeous Giraffe fabric print I found while sorting out a pile of “roll-ups” at work.  The blues, oranges and greens just happened to be in my stash 😉  I really didn’t start with a plan of which fabrics went where, but I took advantage of the colouring page that Juliet contains in her pattern – to give me some idea where the sky and grass will meet.

Back of the Solo Giraffe Quilt

It always amazing when you see a fabric and say “Yes” this is the perfect fabric for my project. I was visiting and playing with fabric at  Clair’s fabric, and fell in love.   The bright flowers and birds in this Echino Decoro fabric for Kokka, are just divine.  I can just imagine a giraffe wanting to live in this garden.  It is a cotton linen, so heavier than Quilting Cotton, but gives this mini quilt (36×24″) the lift it needs.

The feeling is overwhelming when the back of your Quilt looks just as amazing as the front !!  Almost like a “negative of a photograph” !!  You can really see the free motion quilting  stunning effects on the back of this quilt !! I have machine bound this Mini Quilt, so even the straight stitching framing the back looks awesome !  I have used Aurifil thread 2310 to quilt this mini !

sewnbyleanne_foundationpaperpiecing_giraffe

Here are some close-ups just to give you an idea of the free motion quilting I have done here !

sewnbyleanne_foundationpaperpiecing_giraffeI have loved this project and am hoping the recipient loves it just as much as I do !!

Go and check out The Tartan Kiwi – Juliet has some awesome designs and patterns – if I had the time I would create them all 😉

Have a great weekend.

Machine Binding – why haven’t I tried this before ?!

sewnbyleanne_machinebinding_tutorial5

Machine binding

Machine binding a Quilt – Why have I not tried this before ???

A gorgeous teacher suddenly fell ill on Thursday – and her students and I set to work to create her a beautiful Quilt, for her to recover with !!

sewnbyleanne_machinebinding_tutorial_childrensquiltThe children set to work and each drew a picture for their lovely teacher on a nine inch square of white fabric.  I have bordered it with beautiful Kate Spain Charms.  While I was backing it late at night on Sunday – I decided to give machine binding a go !!   OMG !!  I am in awe !!  It is so quick and fast.  I have always hand sewn the binding to my quilts and this was lovely and such a great result !!  I have used the backing fabric in this case.

How did I do it you ask ??  Well after a lot of googling to see how – this is it !!  Try it !!

  1.  Trim the batting to the size of the Quilt top.sewnbyleanne_machinebinding_tutorial7
  2.  Using your 24×6″ Ruler trim your backing  to ONE (1″) past the Quilt top and batting.sewnbyleanne_machinebinding_tutorial1

3.  Fold the edge towards the Quilt top, and then again.  Creating a 1/2″ Top binding from the backing !!  I use my Wonder clips because I love them – but you can use hair clips, bulldog clips or pins.sewnbyleanne_machinebinding_tutorial2

4.  For the corners:  Double fold the edges up until the corner.  Take the top corner and fold to create a 45 degree angle – as pictured below.

sewnbyleanne_machinebinding_tutorial3

5.  Then double fold the next side of the backing towards the Quilt top – and hold with these fantastic Wonder clips !!sewnbyleanne_machinebinding_tutorial4

6.  Once you have completed the perimeter of the Quilt, then topstitch the binding.  Fantastic !! Result in no time !!
sewnbyleanne_machinebinding_tutorial5Within the quilting community, there are often many ways to do one technique – and this technique is no exception !!  This way has certainly worked for me !!  I thought I would be a hand binding girl forever, but I am converted – not totally but I would certainly use this method again !

Have a go !! If you need to finish a Quilt quickly I would thoroughly recommend it !

Leanne 🙂

Trying to get organised.

sewnbyleanne_jollymrclaus_organised_christmas

Organisation……

This week has demanded my attention to be ORGANISED.  When I am Organised, if the kids get sick or something doesn’t go to plan – I am able cope – but this week showed me, when I am juggling many things by the skin of my pants and then one of the kids are sick, then another and why don’t the other two join the boat too – everything heads down hill.  To the point I had to write a very embarrassing email to a lady – in which I had lost the names of her grandchildren she wanted appliqués to their Art Smocks :-(.  Thankfully this the last time it will happen as I have been organising my paperwork meticulously this weekend – partly to find the piece of paper I wrote my customer details on and secondly – so this NEVER happens again.  Ahhh !  It has been one of THOSE weeks.

Apart from this, in between I have met the deadlines of a couple of projects. Thankfully and just !!

Firstly,

Kylie from Little Moo Designs has created yet another stunning bag !!

sewnbyleanne_baybohobag_littlemoodesignsSince I made this bag I have LOVED it.  It fits everything, is COMFY, totally PRACTICAL  and I love the fact that it sits across the body.  This leaves my hands free to run after and grab my four year old when he is trying to escape !!  Thank you Kylie for another Great Bag !!  I saw this Aztec Denim Print in Spotlight as Kylie let me know the style of her new pattern – and instantly thought they would make a great match.  I decided on an Orange zip as I LOVE it as that special detail (plus my favourite colour is orange).

I have alos commenced my Block designs using Blossom Heart Quilts –  DIY Block Design Book.  It has been great.  I now have about 6 pages of Block designs I will share with you.  I am currently creating the tutorials and will announce the tutorial series next month !!  This will be my first – so it is rather exciting……. here is a sneak peek !

sewnbyleanne_blocktutorials_sneekpeek

While I have been patiently awaiting the start of the Farmer’s Wife Quilt-a-long – I have also completed my Christmas project for the year – Jolly Mr Claus.

sewnbyleanne_jollymrclaus_organised_christmasJolly Mr Claus is a pattern from Melly and Me – and He is Adorable.  He met our Elf on the shelf last night 😉  And I am hoping he will keep the Elf in line this year !!  I will be taking PRE-ORDERS for Mr Claus from the 13th September – so watch this space !!

Ms Midge has also announced the Cotton and Steel #aussiecharmalong this week, so I have finally finished the Quilt top.  Here is a sneak peak !!  I won’t show you the entire Mini Quilt 34″x36″ until later in the month!

sewnbyleanne_sneakpeak_organised_cottonandsteel

As you can imagine with all of this – life has been busy – I am still trying to keep up with the Blog-tember too!  Although I am a few days behind  🙁

Have a great week and Enjoy life !

A Teachers Gift with loads of student love !

sewnbyleanne_teachersquilt_play ground

This Teachers Gift is full of Student love !!

Their teacher is going on Maternity Leave and the creation of this Quilt started with two dear friends (Melissa and I)  chatting and coming up with this AWESOME Baby Shower Gift from the kids.

sewnbyleanne_teachersgift_play ground

Each Student has chosen an 8 inch square colour and letter – and drawn a picture with Fabric textas !!  Aren’t they clever ???

sewnbyleanne_teachersgift_overall view

Once each Student had finished their square – then it was my turn to see how they would all come together.  Melissa had tried putting the squares in alphabetical order, but there was a little too much red together – so hence it was decided to be “quirky” and mix the letters up !!  As not all the Squares, were “quilters square ;-)”  I have used the sashing in between to adjust the sizes !!

Melissa also found this gorgeous ABC border print – Alphabet Soup !!  Which has just completed the Quilt top beautifully.  I’m so happy with it – Bright, cheerful and fun – all the characteristics you want in a little one’s play mat !  The children saw their work today in person and are super excited to be giving it to their teacher this week.

The playmat is an awesome size 130x160cm !!

The Back you ask, looks like this……….  The gender of the little one is unknown – so we went Red !! and the strip of Alphabet soup brings a bit of the front to the back !

sewnbyleanne_quiltback_teachersgift

I have used the delicious Aurifil Dove (front) and white (back) cotton to Quilt.  We decided on Spirals as it softens the squares a little and gives lots of texture to the quilt.

sewnbyleanne_teachersgift_closeup

sewnbyleanne_teachersgift_closeup2

These Close ups give a closer look at the Quilting and the gorgeous pictures that the students have drawn.  Can you imagine being the little one having tummy time ????  They are going to have soooo much fun !!!  And be very stimulated 😉

I can’t wait for the students reactions to their teacher receiving their gift this week !!  Enjoy !!

I so enjoy these Quilts, that are designed as you go, not sure what the final design will be, but this has been such a HAPPY Quilt !! n it makes one smile when you look at it !!

Thank you students for the opportunity to frame your work.

Leanne

Garden Delights

sewnbyleanne_gardendelights_heatherbailey

Garden Delights is a gorgeous Quilt I created for Ms Midge’s Heather Bailey’s Charm Along.

Together Garden Delights is a Stunning lap Quilt (54″ Square) to warm anyone’s day and to make you smile !

sewnbyleanne_gardendelights_heatherbailey

Usually I avoid florals, as I am never quite sure what to do with them !!  So when Ms Midge announced the Charm Swap would be Heather Bailey – I took up the challenge !!  I love her bright fresh colours and look what we received from the charm along – 112 gorgeous charms !!

sewnbyleanne_GardenDelights_heatherBaileyCharmsLook at the Vibrant Gorgeous Colours !!  Stunning !

The next challenge was – hmm – what shall I create.  Coincidentally I had watched a couple of You Tube tutorials from the Missouri Quilt Company on You-tube earlier in the week and saw their Falling Charms !!  As a lot of the floral prints are quite large I thought it would be a shame to cut them up – so out came the graph paper – and Garden Delights was created.  I have altered the tutorial’s measurements as I didn’t want to reduce by 5″ squares to 4″.

sewnbyleanne_GardenDelights_blocks

As you can see each charm is bordered on two sides by Kona Cotton Snow to create the basic block.

Together they make Falling Charms !

sewnbyleanne_gardendelights_fallingcharms

As you have seen in a lot of my creations – I don’t usually use borders, but I still had a lot of charms – so I decided to use two borders with mitred corners.  I feel mitred corners sometimes gives that traditional quilt feel !

1. 2″ kona cotton snow

2. 2.5″ strips of Heather Bailey Fabrics – created by simply cutting the charms in half.

sewnbyleanne_gardendelights_mitredcorners

I have to say I am very proud of these corners !!  I was so excited that they worked !!

And so Garden Delights has brightened up such a dear looking Melbourne Garden !!

sewnbyleanne_gardendelights_wintergarden

I already had the binding stripe in my stash – also a Heather Bailey Fabric – Fresh Cut.

The backing is Heather bailey’s Go Go Rose in Pink with a few charms added in !!

I Quilted Garden Delights myself with beautiful swirls to soften the corners.

sewnbyleanne_Gardendelights_quilting

sewnbyleanne_gardendelights_back

I have really enjoyed this Charm Swap and Charm Along, as I have been challenged to work out of my comfort zone with beautiful fabrics ! So thank you Ms Midge and everyone participating for such a gorgeous charm pack to create with !

I can’t wait for the link up to see what everyone else created with these gorgeous charms.

So I challenge anyone try something different – it will pay off !!

Keep Quilting

Leanne xx

A Whale of a Time for two beautiful boys

sewnbyleanne_whaleofatime_cotquilt

I created “Whale Of a Time” last month for a very special arrival in my extended family.  We weren’t sure whether he would be a he or a she – so Elizabeth Hartman’s Preppy the Whale pattern seemed ideal !  I had completed the top of the quilt a couple of weeks earlier but was awaiting the arrival of this gorgeous baby to choose the backing – as I have to confess if Master P was not a boy the backing would have been pink !!

These rainbow whales just make me smile every time I look at them – a great quilt for tummy time.

sewnbyleanne_whaleofatime_cotquilt

For the Quilting I used swirls but included on each whale the splash of water coming from their blow holes – it looks really effective .

sewnbyleanne_whale_blowholes_cotquilt

Last week, my cousins sent me a photo of their gorgeous boys enjoying their arrival gifts !!

sewnbyleanne_whale_cotquiltpat

Isn’t Master P so cute ??  So little when they are a week old !  The Size of the Quilt 60×45″ is an ideal size for a play mat or a cot quilt, or both.

Now for Master H who is just about to turn 2 – I thought how do I make him feel special too – so I created this double sided super hero cape – on one side it has the Batman logo and the other Super Big Brother.  Apparently he was Super Big Brother for days – fantastic !!

sewnbyleanne_superherocape_whale

Being a Mum of four – it is always that fine line, giving them the attention while everyone “goo and gahs” over the new arrival.  Im glad the cape made Master H feel brave and super !!

Congratulations T & C on your beautiful boys.

With lots of love
