The Sunday Wrap 2 (……but on Monday)

sewnbyleanne_whaleofatime_preppythewhale

This Sunday Wrap 2 on Monday, posted a day late….  ooops is full of colourful rainbows and fabric here !!  Michael Millers Glitz, more Kona Cotton Solids from Robert Kaufman – and I have sourced an online fabric store Clairs Fabrics that stock the whole range !!  Even more dangerous than this is, Clair actually lives only about 10 minutes from here !!

Quilts wrapped and sent with love

“Foxy with Style”

This Quilt was made with a lot of love and thought to the recipient – shhhh!  she/he still hasn’t received it, so I can’t say too much.  I just love using Elizabeth Hartman’s Fancy Fox pattern, and have promised my niece in the school holidays to help her make a cushion from this pattern.  Each Fabric gives the fox their own personality.  The Woodlands Fabric is a Riley Blake Print, and the striped binding is just perfect.

“Geometric Cowboys”

Geometric Cowboys is a custom made Cot Quilt (50×40″) , that filled the brief – fun, neutral tones, modern and cowboys !!

The Equilateral Triangles really POP in these neutral hues and the Cowboy Fabric on the back is Vintage with a modern fun feel !!  I have quilted this Quilt using 1 1/2″ straight lines which is stunning. As you can see I have used the same striped binding on this quilt as “Foxy with Style”

“Whale of a Time”

This Quilt top is made using Elizabeth Hartman’s Preppy the Whale Pattern.  This Cot Quilt will be 40×50″, an ideal size for a play mat, cot quilt or comforter.  I love the effect of the Rainbow Whales and the Smile it brings to everyone who has seen it !  This is an easy pattern to follow.  To make the 12×4 1/2″ block the pieces are small and fiddly but the result is well worth it  – all smiles here !

The Sunday Wrap 2 includes the creation of more Quilt blocks:

“Three in One” Heart Block

This is my first I am creating a pattern for !  It needs some tweaking – but it is a stunning 12 1/2″ block.  I will let you know when I release the pattern.

sewnbyleanne_ribbonstarblock

“Ribbon Star Block”

I love this block – as the contrast of the two colours (light and dark tones)  makes the impression of a gentle ribbon wrapping around the star – very clever !

Ripple Block

This block is part of the Bee Hive series by Blossom Heart Quilts.  The block itself is by Gnome Angel.  The centre square was initially negative space and I just had to see what it looked like with a fussy cut square in the centre !

This Sunday Wrap 2 shows just some of the work created by Sewn by Leanne.

From Friday 29th May to 31st May my Feather Treasures Quilt will be shown at the Modern Quilt Show in Kiama – my first quilt show – extremely exciting !!!

Feather Treasures – A Mini Quilt

sewnbyleanne_feathertreasures_miniquilt2

Feather Treasures

My First Mini Quilt – Feather Treasures – this week was a delight to make.  This “Feather Bed Quilt Block” by Anna Marie Horner appealed from the first moment I saw it a couple of weeks ago.

sewnbyleanne_feathertreasures_miniquilt1

As I have been been at home most of the week with laryngitis and 4 small children on school holidays, the fabric delivery of these Dashwood Studio Fabrics from Wild Cotton Fabrics was a BIG highlight !!  The Combination of fabrics and the feather bed Quilt Block Pattern is simply stunning.

I have used Dashwood Studios Cuckoos calling as the backing – and just love those gorgeous Cuckoo Clocks and little birds !! (Please excuse the few threads I have just noticed in this photo !)

sewnbyleanne_feathertreasures_miniquiltbackingThere are a few hints I can give you now that I have made Feather treasures, to make your creations a little easier and without too much fabric wastage.

The link to the Quilt Block Tutorial is : www.annamariehorner.com/feather.bed.quilt.pdf

Tips:

1.  Strip piecing:  cut your PDF pieces out first.  Using WOFs  you need to have a length of 18″ for the pattern pieces to fit on the angle!  You can cut 3 Complete Feathers out of one WOF Strip piece.

In doing this there is quite a bit of fabric wastage, which is another reason why I have cut the four triangles of fabric left on the bias and created 2.5″ bias binding from them.

2.  Paper piecing:  This is the method I would choose next time I create this Quilt.  I think it would certainly decrease the amount of fabric wastage.  I think it would be a great beginners project to paper piecing!

3. Stem of the leaf:  Great for your little long scraps.  It is simply a 1″ strip. So look through your small scraps pile before cutting.

4. Background:  This Mini Quilt took 1/2 yard of grey Kona Cotton Solid.  At first Glance it doesn’t look like a lot of background, and I was surprised that it took most of the half yard.
