Well today the 7th Block: Number 24 – Coral was chosen on the infamous FQS Farmers Wife 1930s Sew Along hosted by Gnome Angel.
Coral – is a great 6.5″ block that allows you to highlight your fussy cutting.
This is the first block I haven’t Foundation Paper Pieced. I created 4 Flying geese blocks for the star points instead of cutting the half square triangles ! Why ?? I’m not exactly sure but a few less seams is not a bad thing !
As this is the 7th block, I pulled the blocks out of my folder that I have finished to date – and WOW !!
This Quilt is going to be bright and vibrant !! At first I wasn’t going to set the blocks on point like the book : The farmers Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt by Laurie Hird sets out. However now I love it !!
I’m not sure what I’m going to use as sashing just yet – but with this set up – on point, narrow sashing might work really well ??
So far we have completed Blocks 8, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 24. Only 91 to go – easy !! lol !!
It is not too late to join the ride !!
Until next week…..
What’s Started ???? Yes, it’s the Farmers Wife Sampler 1930s Quilt-a-long ……. and Wow !! Everyone has hit the ground running !!
The first Block #12 Becky – was released on Sunday – and WOW !! Everyone was ready and waiting !!
The second block #16 Bonnie: was released on Tuesday !!
There are so many different colours, fabrics and styles being used by the participants…….everything from polka dots, ultra modern to French General and Country Cottage.
With every block each Quilter creates, it is true, the personality of the block is created by the fabric we choose !! I can’t wait till we are further on and we start to see the Quilts come to life – each will be different and unique yet created from the same book. Oooh I have goosebumps just thinking of it !
I’m loving the vibrant colours of the fabrics I have chosen to use for this Quilt……. And there are a few prints included that I am able to fussy cut along the way ! I’m so glad Angie’s Fat Quarter Bundle included some Terra Australis as the kangaroos have worked really well in the Bonnie Block.
Some Quilter’s are English Paper Piecing, some are Foundation Paper Piecing and others are using Templates – me – I’m Foundation Paper Piecing as I find this gives me the most accurate cut and a method I am familiar with. For the majority of the Quilts I create I work with larger blocks, so the challenge of working with smaller pieces to complete the 6.5″ blocks is great !
Thank you Angie (aka GnomeAngel) for this splendid opportunity for Quilters to share their knowledge and connect. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced Quilter – there is a space for you in this Quilt-a-long. So many are sharing their knowledge and wealth of experience with novices and getting to know each other – it is very heart warming in today’s world – even if it is through the IT wires !! Angie has organised this so well I am in AWE of her ORGANISATIONAL ABILITY and her TALENT……… <3 <3 WE really do admire and respect you !!
Tomorrow another Block is released – and many will be created !….. Each Wednesday I’ll share with you what I have created ! I’d love to know how you are finding the process !
Many blessings for the days ahead,
This week has been one of “Ups and Downs”. It has been the first week of the school holidays, and in our family of 6, one by one our family has succumbed to illness. Always a challenge to continue to work from home while dealing with sick children – but it has given me the opportunity to do a lot of hand sewing – allowing me to sit on the couch with the kids, yet still cross items off my to-d0 list !! Multi-tasking in the “mum” way !!
There has been A LOT of incidents lately on the News involving Domestic Violence, and yet another partner this week murdered !! Unbelieveable !! I love the call out by @jackiegillies I shared week #Quiltstohealviolence. The Quilting Community is a buzz with Tic Tac Toe blocks and it is sensational to be a part of it. While I was sitting on the couch I drew the cartoon below and decided that it will be part of my Bee Hive Sampler Quilt with all the blocks we have created this year. The Quilt block The Jagged Little Pill designed by @Molli Sparkles has a middle 8″ Square perfect for a message !! I don’t embroider very often (don’t look too closely !), but my Mum did teach me as a little girl. I just used the threads that were in my stash. And while I was being cuddled by sick children I embroidered this – with the “corny” phrase “Quilting binds us together”. There are many occasions when the Quilting community will come together to support another – and I am very proud to be a part of it. The Community’s generosity never ceases to amaze me !!
My daughter and I also made these gorgeous little pouches for one of her friends who’s Mum has just had another baby !! Miss C choose the fabrics and we created the hexies !!
Love it when we can use the scraps and fussy cut them into something so stunningly beautiful <3. I like a little bit of English paper piecing but I am not a big hand sewer !
We used two of the hexies and quilted them to the front of the little pouches !! 4×5″ they are large enough to hold Big Sister’s special little items !!
While they were all watching a movie or two, I’d sit down at the sewing machine, and I created an “Improv” Quilt Block – this one based on the Traditional Herringbone Quilt block. Ive created a lot of Improv blocks before without the sashing but this was the first time with all the fussy sashing. Hmmm I’m not sure if I have become a fan or not ??? It does use a lot of fabric and takes quite a bit of time due to the pressing in between (as you know I’m not one who always presses a seam before the next !!) I will have to try this again to see if there are any little tricks that I could cut down the time effectiveness !!
All in all, it has been a week of “ups and Downs”, but thankfully we are now back to the UPs, and writing this post has been very therapeutic in saying the week is OVER, now for the NEW one – where the LONG AWAITED #FQSFarmerswife1930 begins !!! Yay the first block has been announced – pop over to GnomeAngel’s Blog to find out more !!
Have a great week
Ready to Quilt ???
I think I am as ready as I’ll ever be and as I ever have been to start a Quilt-a-long. I’m getting excited that it is only a week away !! I’m itching to start making the blocks – especially now that I have opened the packages of beautiful fat quarters that arrived a couple of weeks ago !!
Above are a gorgeous combination of 1930s fabrics, Ella Blue Basics, Lakehouse, Emma Jean Jansen’s Terra Australis and Kona cotton solids – OMG !! I am in LOVE !!!
This is the Gnome Angel’s Fat Quarter Bundle put together specifically for the Farmers Wife 1930s Quilt Along – and it is divine !! Look at all those colours – just sooooo Pretty and Amazing !! They are a combination of Ella Blue Basics, Lakehouse, Terra Australis by Emma Jean Jansen and a few of Rosalie Quilan’s designs as well !! Aren’t we Aussie’s so clever !!! Together these fabrics are as pretty as a rainbow !!
Then I combined my own 1930s stash with them !!
I’m so pleased they all work together !! My mind is working over time now at the fabric combinations possible !! Ahh ! It is going to be hard to hold on this week and not to start – but thankfully it is school holidays and all the kids are home to distract me !!
Then I opened Rita Hodge’s (aka Red Pepper Quilts) Kona Cotton Fat Quarter Selection !!
Yay !! The solids also work !!
I am Ready to Quilt !!! Yay !!
I have even cleaned out a drawer next to my sewing machine, specifically for the Quilt-a long – so I know exactly what I have and where !! (Just ignore the Give Way stickers my 4 year old has put on the chest of drawers – apparently they were too white and boring lol !!)
They even fit perfectly into the drawer !! OMG I can’t believe how organised I am for this one !!
One more week everyone !!
See you there.
