Farmers Wife 1930s – 4 !!

sewnbyleanne_fwbingo_fqsfarmerswife1930s

Wow can you believe it ???

We are up to 15 Farmers Wife 1930s Blocks !!  Only 81 to go !!
sewnbyleanne_farmerswife_15blocks_fqsfarmerswife1930s

Photos now of all the blocks together – really start to show how stunning everyone’s quilts will be !!  I have my favourites and certainly some blocks I’m thinking of redoing as they are a little subtle ….. but time will tell.

My favourite Farmers Wife 1930s block so far is ……… 1 – Addie !!  It was a great opportunity to feature the fussy cutting in a bigger square.  A reminder that these individual blocks are only 6.5″ , so everyone is working with SMALL pieces!!

All my blocks are foundation paper pieced as I am finding this keeps the consistent size between the blocks !

Gnome Angel is playing Bingo on her page with blocks 1, 8, 16, 24, 94 !!

This block number selection amazingly features some of my favourite blocks so far and lots of fussy cutting opportunities !  Aren’t the little ducks too cute ???

It is still not too late to join in the fun…..  we still have 81 blocks to go !!

Have a great Week

Farmers Wife 1930s – Week 3

sewnbyleanne_fqs1930farmerswife_blockstodate_farmerswife1930week3

Well today the 7th Block: Number 24 – Coral was chosen on the infamous FQS Farmers Wife 1930s Sew Along hosted by Gnome Angel.

farmerswife1930s_coral_week3_sewnbyleanne

Coral – is a great 6.5″ block that allows you to highlight your fussy cutting.

This is the first block I haven’t Foundation Paper Pieced.  I created 4 Flying geese blocks for the star points instead of cutting the half square triangles !  Why ??  I’m not exactly sure but a few less seams is not a bad thing !

As this is the 7th block, I pulled the blocks out of my folder that I have finished to date – and WOW !!

This Quilt is going to be bright and vibrant !!  At first I wasn’t going to set the blocks on point like the book : The farmers Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt by Laurie Hird sets out.  However now I love it !!

farmerswife1930s_week3_sewnbyleanne

I’m not sure what I’m going to use as sashing just yet – but with this set up – on point, narrow sashing might work really well ??

So far we have completed Blocks 8, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 24.  Only 91 to go – easy !!  lol !!

It is not too late to join the ride !!

Until next week…..

Ready to Quilt…..

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930samplerquilt_readytoquilt2

Ready to Quilt ???

I think I am as ready as I’ll ever be and as I ever have been to start a Quilt-a-long.  I’m getting excited that it is only a week away !!  I’m itching to start making the blocks – especially now that I have opened the packages of beautiful fat quarters that arrived a couple of weeks ago !!

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930samplerquilt_readytoquilt2

Above are a gorgeous combination of 1930s fabrics, Ella Blue Basics, Lakehouse, Emma Jean Jansen’s Terra Australis and Kona cotton solids – OMG !! I am in LOVE !!!

This is the Gnome Angel’s Fat Quarter Bundle put together specifically for the Farmers Wife 1930s Quilt Along – and it is divine !!  Look at all those colours – just sooooo Pretty and Amazing !!  They are a combination of Ella Blue Basics, Lakehouse, Terra Australis by Emma Jean Jansen and a few of Rosalie Quilan’s designs as well !!  Aren’t we Aussie’s so clever !!!  Together these fabrics are as pretty as a rainbow !!

Then I combined my own 1930s stash with them !!

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930samplerquilt_readytoquilt

I’m so pleased they all work together !!  My mind is working over time now at the fabric combinations possible !! Ahh ! It is going to be hard to hold on this week and not to start – but thankfully it is school holidays and all the kids are home to distract me !!

Then I opened Rita Hodge’s (aka Red Pepper Quilts)  Kona Cotton Fat Quarter Selection !!

sewnbyleanne_readytoquilt_farmerswife1930samplerquilt

Yay !!  The solids also work !!

I am Ready to Quilt !!!  Yay !!

I have even cleaned out a drawer next to my sewing machine, specifically for the Quilt-a long – so I know exactly what I have and where !!  (Just ignore the Give Way stickers my 4 year old has put on the chest of drawers – apparently they were too white and boring lol !!)

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930samplerquilt_readytoquilt3

They even fit perfectly into the drawer !!  OMG I can’t believe how organised I am for this one !!

One more week everyone !!

See you there.

An Organised Quilt-a-long for now !

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930s_quiltalong_organisation

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930sewalong_bookandfabric

Organisation – is something I like to be, and something I loved prior to having children.  A Type A personality, I LOVED colour co-ordinated stationary and could spend HOURS colour coding, filing and being prepared.  Some may have called this “procrastination”, instead of doing the study I needed to do.  But I had convinced myself I couldn’t work without things being “pretty” (aka organised 😉 ).

Then children came and I learnt that the first lesson they teach you is – “you are no longer in control, they are”.  I tried after one, then two, maybe a little after number three and certainly not after number four – to maintain my love of colour co-ordinated stationary and the feeling of being organised !  However, kids craft took over !!  Therfore, it has been a while since I bought stationary for myself – the children’s school booklists have been as close as I have come….

Seeing the many blogs and posts of the Farmers Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt-a-long of “Quilters Organisation 101” – inspired me to be organised with this Quilt-a-long.  I went to a local Stationary store – Officeworks – “browsed” as much as one can with a very excited 4 year old in tow……  I founds this gorgeous Orange three ring folder – matching the Sewn by Leanne Logo.  Then I ventured to the binding/ printing service to see how much Spiral binding the book would be – $5 – I was sold !!

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930s_quiltalong_organisation

Then I encountered printing dilemmas !!  I printed 1-50 – but I only set it to print “Actual Size” on the first block.  OH NO!!  So much paper wasted !!  I had to go into each individual file to adjust the printing size :-(.  After block 5, I decided I would take the disc to Officeworks and ask them to do this time investment !!  They groaned but agreed, and I left clear instructions for each file to be printed at ACTUAL size.  I arrived back the next morning – and alas – there was the pile of 100 blocks beautifully printed BUT ALL at least 1/8th of an inch smaller AHHHHHHHHH!   Thankfully the lady serving behind the counter was also a quilter and understood my dilemma.  So after all that, I asked for a refund and I went home and printed the remaining 95 out individually on my home printer.

Now I have a beautifully organised folder of all 99 blocks, including the rotary cutting instructions.  I printed out a colour copy of the above photo for the front pocket ! I am already to start creating starting the 28th September – it is marked in my diary Gnome Angel !!  How exciting.

Meanwhile to stop myself starting to create this beautiful Quilt – I’m practising on other paper-piecing challenges……  Using 627 Handworks (aka Julie Hirt) 2″ hexie tiles I have started creating a fun Hexie-Quilt from my Cotton and Steel charms……  together with Charcoal Shot cotton !!

Here is a sneak peek for my next blog post later in the week….

They are small and fiddly – yet stunning !!

See you later in the week.

A Quilt along with a HUGE commitment.

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930sewalong_bookandfabric

A Quilt Along !!  There has been sooooo….. much excitement in the Quilting Hive this month with the announcement of The Farmer’s Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt Along !!

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930squilt_quiltalong

This Quilt Along is being hosted by the gorgeous Angie aka Gnome Angel and the Fat Quarter Shop.

sewnbyleanne_thefarmerswife1930samplerquilt_quiltalong

I have never participated in a Sew / Quilt Along before, so embarking on 99 Blocks is huge.  Some of my favourite bloggers are also hosting some of the tutorials e.g. Blossom Heart Quilts,  Ms Midge  and verykerryberry….  so this should be a lot of fun.

To Participate you need to purchase Laurie Hird’s book – Wow the letters are fascinating to read, and the blocks are lovely – the challenge will be – the size.  All the 99 blocks are only 6.5″ square – Wow !  That is half the size of most of the blocks I create at present.  The book has a gorgeous layout – easy to read and see the blocks.  There are blocks you can print out and colour to see if your colour choice will work !!  A beautiful book to have on the coffee table to flick through at leisure until the quilt-along gets under way!

This book is accompanied by a CD that has all the paper piecing patterns for each block !! The next dilemma was the use of Templates or to paper piece ???  Marti Michell has 5 sets of templates that will help you cut all the blocks.  It was very tempting to buy all 5 sets – especially when I found them at the Quilting Shop I work in  – but I have decided to put more $$ into the fabric I will use than the templates.  I can’t help but think it would have been nice for the Fat Quarter Shop to put to together a kit of the Essential Templates for this Quilt Along – especially as over 2000 Quilters have joined across the world !!

The next incredibly important decision is the FABRIC.  I’m not one who takes a long time pondering over my fabric choices.  I tend to have my favourite fabric designers and colours which has held me in good stead so far……  I came across this assortment of 1930s fabrics and loved them.

sewnbyleanne_farmerswife1930sewalong_fabricselection

This is just the start, and from this selection I will add in solids and more modern fresh fabrics.  This Fabric Selection certainly increased my excitement A LOT !!  Many of the 99 Blocks in this Quilt Along are quite traditional – and I’m hoping to put a Modern spin on them (fingers-crossed).

Many are now awaiting the 28th of September, 2015, when the Quilt Along begins.  Gnome Angel will be posting tutorials twice a week for a year…… that is WOW – HUGE !! Everything about this Quilt Along is huge !!  I love it !  If you are interested it is not too late to join – pop over to Gnome Angel and join her Facebook Group

I’m looking forward to learning heaps from Quilters I have watched from afar.  You can follow my journey here as I will post my Quilt Along adventures as I go !!

I will post each week on my efforts, what I found challenging and the tips I love and made the blocks easier !!

See you next week, to see how organised I’ve become in preparing for this Quilt Along.

Leanne xx
