One Hour Basket Swap, that took many more !!

sewnbyleanne_onehourbasket_owl

The One Hour Basket Swap within the Quilt Block Boot Camp Facebook Group has been a lot of fun !!

I have always wanted to make the One Hour Basket – even if it was to see, if it really only took an hour to make !!  I have made more since this swap and the tutorial by Kelby Sews does only take One hour, however this is for the basic basket.

My partner in the swap is the organiser – Jane from Lil Pip Designs – so there was pressure right from the start to make sure she received a gift to say THANK YOU for organising this swap !!

I am delighted to say – she loved her treats !!  As she posted this collage on Facebook on the weekend !

We started with the brief :  Love Cotton and Steel, Owls and NO pink and red !!

Coincidentally, I was going through a phase of paper piecing and I found Elizabeth Hartman’s Owl Pattern.  Alas it was too big, so I shrank the pattern to fit the side of the one hour basket dimensions (by 60%!) .

I had just purchased a Layer cake of Cotton and Steel from Clair’s Fabrics – and found this gorgeous grey with teal brick pattern  – perfect !!

The sides are a little higher than the dimensions Kelby Sews mentions – but these dimensions also accommodated a couple of outside pockets on the otherside too   !!

sewnbyleanne_onehourbasket_pockets

There are 3 pockets on this side – it is a little hard to see in the photo but there is a pen pocket in the centre !!  I reinforced the sides with medium interfacing and the pellon for extra strength.  I really hope Jane finds this basket useful.  I love this very Aztec Cotton and Steel print – funky and modern !!

Then the fun part of the swap started – what to fill the basket with !!  As I live at the “Gateway” to the Yarra Valley – it had to contain Chocolate (yes, I thought about wine !!  but the basket isn’t quite big enough to hold a bottle 🙁 ).

The Card is handmade by The Little Card Boutique – another Melbourne based business.  Helen makes the most stunning cards !!  I really recommend you take a look, I now buy all my special cards from her !  And the Charm Pack I bought from the Cotton Factory on an IG sale ages ago – and it was just the perfect treat to pop in !

The Umbrella Lady from the pattern – Spring Fling – by JMZ Blondze on Craftsy was then created for Jane – again using  Cotton and Steel Fabric.  It is such a lovely pattern to paper piece !

Unfortunately I didn’t get to the Craft and Quilt Fair this year to meet Jane and personally give her, her box of treasures.  Instead I was looking after children and doing many Mum things…….. so on the weekend I was creating and using the Triangular Pouch Pattern by A Spoonful of Sugar.  So as I was wrapping up the gift to send on Monday I popped two of these in as well !!  These were made from my stash of Liberty fabrics and using the Charcoal Shot Cotton.  These are fun little gifts to make – great to put chocolates or little items into !!

All together the Gift looked great together and hopefully it said thank you enough for organising such a great and fun swap for us !!

Thank you Jane for all your organising and ENJOY !!

Until we meet……

Quilt Blocks and more……..

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_churndash

Signing up to the Quilt Block Boot camp and The Bee Hive Swap  has been sensational.  I cannot thank Sew Delicious, Blossom Heart Quilts and Gnome Angel enough for organising them <3 <3  .  Please excuse the number of photos in this post compared to words, But I’m just having so much fun extending my skills, I have to show you.

Economy Quilt Blocks

These are just gorgeous.  They are simple but so effective !  I plan to create a couple of “I spy” Quilts with these Quilt blocks.  I love to fussy cut, so I have been enjoying these !  Which block do you like the most ???  The Sneetches holding hands is my favourite !!

Quilt Block Boot Camp

The rest week last week has allowed me to catch up:  Yes as you scroll through the photos you will recognise similar fabrics, and my aim is to build a Quilt with all of these Quilt Blocks or maybe even more than ONE !!

The SIMPLE FRIENDSHIP QUILT BLOCKS are first – I just love how the positive and negative images work together !!

Fabric :  Cotton and Steel Tanagrams in Indigo and Petit Street by Dashwood studios.

The CROSS-STITCH BLOCK by PileO’Fabric is gorgeous too.  I’m undecided whether this Quilt Block is actually suited to 2 fabrics that are patterned.  It may be a bit too busy.  What do you think ??

Fabric:  Creative Thursday Fabric on White and Aneela Hoey Little Apples Red.

From the same fabric I made the simple little HEART QUILT BLOCK by Cluck Cluck Sew.

When I first saw this photo I thought I’d forgotten to sew the left top corner piece to finish the heart, however I have I assure you – I just didn’t make sure it just has too much of the red heart in the small piece.  Something to always watch out for, especially when you are cutting 1″ blocks !!  It does’t take much for the cutting to go wrong !!

Today, I enjoyed sewing the CHURN DASH QUILT BLOCK by Cluck Cluck Sew (another one of my favourite Bloggers).  I love the fussy cut middle Square.  Mixing Cotton and Steel fabrics with the more traditional pattern of Tilda is not something I would ordinarily think of.  But I think the pink highlights the pink tanagrams.

Fabric:  Cotton and Steel Tanagrams in Indigo, Tilda Damask Ruby Pink, Riley Blake’s Country Girl.

The Bee Hive Swap

These Blocks are more challenging, but the end results are stunning.

Firstly the block I made for the month of March was the WANTA FANTA by The Better Off Thread.  The requirements were any scrappy bright fabrics for the corners and fan, but the background was to be Chartreuse (green).

This is the result, the Quilt Block is currently in the snail mail to the Queen Bee, so hopefully she will like it !!

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_wantafantaThe challenging aspect to this block is to get your scant 1/4″ seams correct so that the fans will line up with the corners.

Fabrics:  Again I have used Cotton and Steel Tanagrams, 2 Creative Thursday Fabrics, and The light blue fabric is by Sue Penn for Studio B fabrics.

As well as creating my monthly swap Quilt Block, I am making the additional blocks, which will go into my Quilt eventually !!  This MINERAL QUILT BLOCK by Jane at QUILT JANE is gorgeous and great for those little scraps.

Again I have used my favourite Cotton and Steel Fabric, but included a great low volume black and White text Print called Vineyard from Riley Blake fabrics.  This is new to my stash and bought it from the Cotton Factory in the last couple of weeks.  Make sure you follow Alison on Instagram @Cotton Factory Destash as she has great deals on unusual stunning fabrics like this one !

I was very chuffed when @QuiltJane on Instagram shared this block over the weekend.  Thank you 🙂

QCA Bee

This is the last block I’m sharing today !!  It is called the X PLUS QUILT BLOCK.  I love the bright scrappy feel of it, and can’t wait to see this Quilt put together !!  A tutorial can be found on the Badskirt blog.

sewnbyleanne_quiltblocks_xplus

Using a bright fabric for the PLUS and then extending with a dark certainly works for this block.  Again I have used the Vineyard Low Volume Fabric .  I love the red centre of this block !!

As you can see hopefully these Blocks will come together in an awesome Quilt !!  Some are easy and others are challenging, but I think sometimes the easier ones are just as  stunning.  Let me know what you think of the blocks, and if you feel so inclined try one of out (or all of them !)  Just click on the links !

If you do try one of them, please share with me !!  Here in the comments or on Instagram @sewnbyleanne

Happy Quilting

Leanne 🙂
