Fans of Cotton and Steel

Fans of Cotton and Steel”  or FCS as I have shortened it in my design book, has been a labour of love that I have shared with you over social media for the last two months – and OMG – I can finally say it is finished – and I’m even more excited to say – I LOVE it !!!

Coincidentally, just as I received my 112 Cotton and Steel charms from #aussiecharmswaps run by the lovely Ms Midge – I saw @JulieHirt’s Hexie tiles on Instagram.  And I feel instantly in love with the pattern.  For that weekend her Foundation Paper Piecing pattern was free !  How amazing was that !!  So I downloaded the Hexietiles from her blog 627 Handworks.  These Hexietiles come in three sizes 1″, 2″ and 4″.  Without really thinking I thought I would create 4″ Hexietiles – but alas the 5″ charms were not large enough for these, so I went with the 2″ Hexietile.

These are the first four Hexietiles I created.  Have i mentioned yet that I not only love these Hexietiles but also the fabric !!  I am a BIG fan of the Cotton and Steel Designers !!  When I posted this photo on instagram I received the largest number of likes, comments and visits, that any of my work has ever received and I was soooooooo excited !!

My excitement grew and so did “Fans of Cotton and Steel” .  Amongst completing commissioned Quilts I would create 3 or 4 hexietiles a night. Each Charm produced approximately 3 sectors of a fan !!  There was no order to how I placed the colours, I just tried to fussy cut the charms as much as possible so that the fabrics could shine !!

Once I had completed these three rows I started to have an idea of how I wanted the Quilt to proceed.  I LOVE the tigers and thought, keeping one charm intact on its own would create a focal point for the Quilt.   I am so glad I did, as it just increases the texture of this Quilt to the next level.

Hence I created the rest of “Fans of Cotton and Steel” around this focal point !  The colours are just stunning aren’t they ??

I was so excited when when my favourite Cotton and Steel designers – Melody Miller – actually commented on my Hexies and wanted a high-def photo of them.  I had goose-bumps all day long….

So the Quilt grew until there were no more charms to cut :-(.  The final size is a lovely sized Mini Quilt 36×40″ that will hang in our entrance way eventually !!  I did use some of my stash just to even out some of the colours towards the finish !

Once the Quilt top was completed it hung over my balustrade for a number of weeks as I just wasn’t sure of how to Quilt it ???????!  But Wow this last weekend I had my Quilting mo-jo in place and look even on the back the Quilting comes together to produce the arrows in the same shape as the Charcoal grey triangles at the front !!

This design on the back fitting in so well with the Cotton and Steel Mesa Overlook Serape Indigo by Alexia Marcelle Abegg, was an absolute bonus !!  I couldn’t have hoped for it to look better than it does !!

At times it is difficult to find a Quilting pattern that will let the fabric shine – but simply following the lines of the Charcoal Essex Linen Triangles – has allowed the Cotton and Steel Fabric to shine – which I love !!

Garden Delights

sewnbyleanne_gardendelights_heatherbailey

Garden Delights is a gorgeous Quilt I created for Ms Midge’s Heather Bailey’s Charm Along.

Together Garden Delights is a Stunning lap Quilt (54″ Square) to warm anyone’s day and to make you smile !

sewnbyleanne_gardendelights_heatherbailey

Usually I avoid florals, as I am never quite sure what to do with them !!  So when Ms Midge announced the Charm Swap would be Heather Bailey – I took up the challenge !!  I love her bright fresh colours and look what we received from the charm along – 112 gorgeous charms !!

sewnbyleanne_GardenDelights_heatherBaileyCharmsLook at the Vibrant Gorgeous Colours !!  Stunning !

The next challenge was – hmm – what shall I create.  Coincidentally I had watched a couple of You Tube tutorials from the Missouri Quilt Company on You-tube earlier in the week and saw their Falling Charms !!  As a lot of the floral prints are quite large I thought it would be a shame to cut them up – so out came the graph paper – and Garden Delights was created.  I have altered the tutorial’s measurements as I didn’t want to reduce by 5″ squares to 4″.

sewnbyleanne_GardenDelights_blocks

As you can see each charm is bordered on two sides by Kona Cotton Snow to create the basic block.

Together they make Falling Charms !

As you have seen in a lot of my creations – I don’t usually use borders, but I still had a lot of charms – so I decided to use two borders with mitred corners.  I feel mitred corners sometimes gives that traditional quilt feel !

1. 2″ kona cotton snow

2. 2.5″ strips of Heather Bailey Fabrics – created by simply cutting the charms in half.

I have to say I am very proud of these corners !!  I was so excited that they worked !!

And so Garden Delights has brightened up such a dear looking Melbourne Garden !!

I already had the binding stripe in my stash – also a Heather Bailey Fabric – Fresh Cut.

The backing is Heather bailey’s Go Go Rose in Pink with a few charms added in !!

I Quilted Garden Delights myself with beautiful swirls to soften the corners.

I have really enjoyed this Charm Swap and Charm Along, as I have been challenged to work out of my comfort zone with beautiful fabrics ! So thank you Ms Midge and everyone participating for such a gorgeous charm pack to create with !

I can’t wait for the link up to see what everyone else created with these gorgeous charms.

So I challenge anyone try something different – it will pay off !!

Keep Quilting

Leanne xx
